Holistic Guernsey reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy which works by manipulation and massage of the feet and hands to help heal the whole person, rather than the prevailing symptoms.

It has been seen in manuscripts from Ancient Egypt, India and China. It was introduced to the West by Dr William Fitzgerald in 1913. He found that reflex areas of the feet and hands were linked to other parts of the body. This was refined and expanded into its current form by Eunice Ingham in the 1930s, when she observed that tension or congestion in a part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body, and so treating the feet or hands would have a relaxing and healing effect on the rest of the body.

Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's balance. It is a gentle, non-invasive approach which encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own health.

Reflexology can be effective in the treatment of:

  • Back pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Arthritis
  • Migraine
  • Sports injuries
  • Infertility
  • Sleep disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Digestive problems
  • Stress and stress-related conditions

Reflexology is not a cure for medical conditions or diseases.

The best explanation for how reflexology works is to look at the body's nervous system.

Nerve endings in the feet and hands are stimulated by massage and pressure.  This helps promote relaxation, improve circulation, stimulate vital organs in the body and encourage the body's natural healing processes.

Unlike conventional medicine, reflexology works on the underlying problems within the body and works through the body's nervous system. Sometimes lactic acid can be felt in the foot in the form of little crystals. This is a sediment due to poor eating or lack of exercise and can be crushed and reabsorbed into the body thereby allowing the lymph system to eliminate the waste product.

It is possible that there will be quite a dramatic reaction to the first treatment in various forms such as increased bowel movements, cold type symptoms or skin problems. This is a very healthy sign which tells you that the treatment has begun the process of releasing harmful toxins from the body. During treatment some areas of the foot may feel a little tender and these will correlate with the problem areas in the body.

On your first visit, we will have a preliminary consultation to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. This first session normally lasts between 1 and 1½ hours. Subsequent sessions generally last from 30 minutes to an hour and we use a comfortable chair and a little talc. I may recommend a course of treatment depending on your body's needs.

You should feel relaxed at the end of a session. How long that relaxation lasts is a good indicator of the effectiveness of the session. Make note of this and tell your reflexologist your response to the session. This can be helpful information.
